Erik Spoelstra reacts to LaMelo Ball’s controversial moment

The overtime clash between the Miami Heat and the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday ended in dramatic fashion, but it also sparked frustration from Miami’s head coach, Erik Spoelstra, who labeled a key sequence a “stupid play.”

Charlotte secured a tight 127–126 victory in the play-in tournament, with LaMelo Ball delivering the decisive layup. However, earlier in the game, Ball was involved in a contentious incident that drew significant attention.

During the first half, Simone Fontecchio rejected Ball’s shot, sending him to the floor. The loose ball ended up with Bam Adebayo, but as described by ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk, Ball reached out and grabbed Adebayo’s legs.

The contact caused Adebayo to fall hard, and he later exited the game, eventually being ruled out in the second half with a lower back injury.

Spoelstra strongly criticized the play and believed Ball should have been removed from the game. Despite the controversy, Ball remained on the court and finished with an impressive stat line of 30 points and 10 assists.

“I don’t think it’s cute. I don’t think it’s funny. I think it’s a stupid play,” Spoelstra said, per Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype.

“It’s a dangerous play. Obviously, our best player was out. I’m not making an excuse. The Hornets played great and made those plays down the stretch. We had our opportunities to win. That’s a shame. He should be penalized for that.

“I don’t think that belongs in the game, tripping guys, shenanigans. Somebody has got to see that. He should have been thrown out of the game for that. There’s no place in the game for that.”
