Even without Karl-Anthony Towns in Friday’s convincing win over Chicago, the Knicks are getting closer to full health ahead of the playoffs, and their rotation is starting to come into focus, according to Ian Begley of SNY.
With Mitchell Robinson in the starting lineup, head coach Mike Brown tested Jeremy Sochan as a backup center and liked what he saw, even naming him the team’s Defensive Player of the Game.
“It allowed us to do a lot of things like switch pick and rolls,” Brown said. “It brought a different element to our game. Not just offensively with the speed, but defensively with switching a lot of things and just keeping the ball in front of us.”
Robinson is still expected to handle most of the backup center minutes in the postseason, but Sochan’s versatility could give Brown more flexibility, including the option to pair Towns and Robinson together more often.
Elsewhere, Jose Alvarado and rookie Mohamed Diawara didn’t see action in the first three quarters, as the team prioritizes getting Miles McBride and Landry Shamet fully integrated.
“Deuce is getting healthier and Landry’s getting healthy and trying to find minutes for those guys – both of those guys are capable of playing that (backup guard) spot – is going to be a priority because they’ve proven themselves this year for us,” Brown said.
