Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic is out indefinitely after suffering a left hamstring injury, according to NBA insider Shams Charania. The 27-year-old will miss the remainder of the regular season, and his status for the playoffs remains uncertain.
Doncic’s agent, Bill Duffy of WME Basketball, announced plans to request an “Extraordinary Circumstances Challenge” to the NBA’s 65-game eligibility rule. Duffy highlighted Doncic’s historic season, citing his league-leading scoring, 33.5 points per game, 7.7 rebounds, and 8.3 assists, which helped the Lakers secure third place in the Western Conference.
The challenge also accounts for two games Doncic missed in December due to the birth of his second child in Slovenia. Duffy emphasized that Doncic returned to the team just two days later, demonstrating commitment despite being on another continent.
“His record-breaking season deserves to be noted in the history books, despite last night’s unfortunate injury and other extraordinary circumstances,” Duffy said. He confirmed coordination with the NBAPA and league office to ensure a fair outcome.
Doncic has appeared in 64 games this season, averaging 35.8 minutes per game and shooting 47.6% from the field. He ranks as the team’s leading scorer, ahead of Austin Reaves (23.3 PPG) and LeBron James (20.6 PPG), underscoring his central role in the Lakers’ offense.
The Lakers (50–27) remain third in the Western Conference and are positioned for a playoff run, but losing Doncic for the final stretch could affect seeding. The team relies on him to maintain high offensive output and facilitate ball movement, making the timing of his injury significant.
The NBA’s 65-game rule requires players to meet a minimum to qualify for end-of-season awards, including MVP and scoring honors. Duffy’s application aims to ensure that the circumstances surrounding Doncic’s missed games do not disqualify him, given his statistical impact and contribution to the Lakers’ success.
