Kansas coach Bill Self pushed back on reports suggesting he’s about to retire, calling the speculation inaccurate while confirming he hasn’t yet decided on returning next season.
“No news. All b.s. Bad info,” Self said, adding he has no timeline for a decision.
After the season-ending loss to St. John’s, the 63-year-old said he would consult his family and evaluate his health before committing to a 24th season.
Health remains the key factor, as he’s dealt with multiple cardiac issues since 2022, though he expressed some optimism.
“I feel as good as I’ve felt in a long time,” Self said. “I’m not making any statements whatsoever. But every year … when you get to be doing it as long as I’ve done it, I look at it in five-year increments. Now I’m probably looking at it in more two-year increments.”
Assistant Norm Roberts added that Self’s health is an important variable, though he has no inside knowledge of the decision.
“I do think obviously, because of the health issues that he’s had, that’s another variable that’s involved in the decision-making,” Roberts said.
Self continues working as usual and will decide later, with Kansas set up to remain competitive if he returns.
