Brad Stevens is no longer a candidate for the head coaching position at the University of North Carolina, according to CBS Sports sources.

After the Tar Heels dismissed Hubert Davis on Tuesday, Stevens quickly became one of the top names linked to the opening, but he has now taken himself out of the running.

Stevens, 49, made his name at Butler, where he guided the program to back-to-back national championship game appearances before making the jump to the NBA in 2013 as head coach of the Boston Celtics.

He quickly established himself as one of the league’s more respected coaches.

In 2021, Stevens transitioned away from coaching and into an executive role, taking over the Celtics’ front office following Danny Ainge’s departure.

Over the years, he has also drawn interest from the Indiana Hoosiers for their head coaching job, but he has repeatedly declined those opportunities.

With Stevens out of consideration, North Carolina is still evaluating other potential candidates, including Tommy Lloyd, Dusty May, TJ Otzelberger, and Billy Donovan.
