The Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves meet Wednesday night at Target Center in Minneapolis with both teams dealing with notable absences ahead of the Western Conference matchup.
Tipoff is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET as the Rockets (43-28) face the Timberwolves (44-28) in a game that could affect positioning in the crowded playoff race. Minnesota currently sits fifth in the Western Conference standings, while Houston trails closely in sixth.
Minnesota will be without its leading scorer after Anthony Edwards was ruled out with right knee patellofemoral pain syndrome. The All-Star guard has been one of the league’s top offensive performers this season, averaging 29.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game across 58 appearances.
His absence removes a major source of perimeter scoring for the Timberwolves. Edwards is shooting 49.2% from the field and 40.2% from three-point range while leading the team in usage.
Minnesota’s injury report also lists Ayo Dosunmu as questionable with right calf soreness. The guard has appeared in 18 games this season and averaged 13.2 points and 3.3 assists while shooting 52.5% from the field.
Three Timberwolves players are unavailable due to G League assignments. Enrique Freeman, Zyon Pullin and Rocco Zikarsky are all listed as out on two-way contracts.
Even without Edwards, Minnesota still features several productive contributors. Julius Randle leads the frontcourt with 21.0 points and 6.8 rebounds per game, while Jaden McDaniels adds 14.6 points and shoots 51.7% from the floor.
Rudy Gobert anchors the defense and rebounding with 11.5 boards and 1.6 blocks per game while shooting 69.7% from the field.
Houston enters the game with fewer players on the injury report but remains without veteran guard Fred VanVleet. The former All-Star is out following right knee ACL repair.
Center Steven Adams is also unavailable after undergoing surgery on his left ankle. Adams has averaged 8.6 rebounds in limited action this season.
Tristen Newton is listed out due to his two-way assignment with the G League.
Despite those absences, Houston continues to rely on a balanced core led by Kevin Durant and Alperen Sengun. Durant leads the Rockets with 25.9 points per game while shooting 52.0% from the field and 41.1% from three-point range.
Sengun contributes 20.4 points, 9.0 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game, giving Houston a versatile playmaking center.
Amen Thompson has also played a major role in Houston’s backcourt. The guard averages 18.0 points, 7.8 rebounds and 5.2 assists across 69 starts.
The teams have met once this season. Houston secured a 110-105 victory on Jan. 16 in the previous matchup.
Both clubs enter Wednesday’s game with mixed recent results. The Rockets lost 132-124 on the road against the Chicago Bulls in their most recent outing after defeating the Miami Heat 123-122 in the previous game.
Minnesota, meanwhile, is coming off a 102-92 road win over the Boston Celtics following a 108-104 home loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.
