Donovan Mitchell scored 42 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers edged the Orlando Magic 136-131 on Tuesday at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, extending their winning streak to four games. After the contest, Mitchell spoke candidly about the team’s defensive struggles and what it will take to improve.
“We could be better, right? I mean, obviously give up 131 points. They were a little comfortable…even when we got stops, we wouldn’t rebound the ball,” Mitchell said, highlighting the Cavaliers’ difficulty in limiting second-chance opportunities. He noted Orlando had 13 offensive rebounds to Cleveland’s six.
On the message from coach Kenny Atkinson regarding defensive accountability, Mitchell stated, “He’s not wrong. You love when a coach is honest with you. We all have our goals…it’s on us to go out there and fix it. The intensity is there.”
Mitchell expressed confidence that the team can elevate its defense but emphasized execution. “Very. But I don’t want to say it’s like we’ll just be there. We have to execute it…there’s 10 games. We got to get there now. And I have no doubt that we will.”
The All-Star guard also discussed individual growth within the team. “I was just telling him he drives like he’s Giannis…when he’s able to get there, get downhill and now he’s collapsing the defense…we’re tougher offensively as a team,” he said about Sam Merrill’s development in attacking the rim.
Mitchell underscored the importance of mindset for defensive improvement: “When you have a win like this that doesn’t feel like a win, that definitely helps…you have that feeling in the front of your brain…it’s on us to go out there and do that.” He also noted the team’s self-accountability: “1000%. We’re in timeouts discussing…those are the conversations you have…we’re all in this together.”
On his personal recovery from a recent eye injury, Mitchell reported progress. “I can see now…if you close this eye versus this eye, it’s definitely a little blurry, but it worked out tonight. I think I’m getting better.”
The Cavaliers, now 45-27 and 2 1/2 games behind the New York Knicks for third in the Eastern Conference, saw Mitchell continue his dominance over Orlando. It was his third 40-point game in 23 regular-season meetings against the Magic, averaging 27.2 points per game—the sixth-highest scoring average in NBA history versus the team.
James Harden added 26 points, while Evan Mobley contributed 19 points on perfect 8-for-8 shooting. For Orlando, Paolo Banchero led with 36 points, but the Magic have now lost six straight and sit in a three-way tie for eighth place in the East.
Mitchell concluded by stressing leadership on both ends of the court. “Max, myself, Sam, Kenny…we’re vocalizing…holding each other accountable. New guys, 10,000%. That’s what makes those three additions really good for us.”
