Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson highlighted defensive concerns despite Tuesday’s 136-131 victory over the Orlando Magic.
He noted, “If we’re going to play defense like this we’re going to have a short playoff stint… when it comes playoff time, it’s not going to be that easy offensively.”
Atkinson identified major issues, saying, “Everything. So it’s the compete level… along with the compete level there’s an IQ level… and the last part of that is communication.”
Reflecting on his lineup choices, he said, “I figured we couldn’t get stopped, so might as well put the guys who can put it in the hole… that’s fool’s gold.”
On Thomas Bryant, Atkinson added, “He’s one of the guys I got… never have to worry about his compete level… it’s a consistency, how long you can compete.”
He emphasized accountability, stating, “Our leaders got to take ownership of getting that locker room to take ownership of defending better… it really starts there.”
Atkinson addressed the team’s recent offensive performance, saying, “We’re playing well offensively… but there’s two sides of the ball… you have to be top 10, offense, defense… that gives you the best chance.”
Discussing championship-level defense, he explained, “We’re not a top 10 defense right now… probably 13, 14 after this game… we’re capable… that’s where the frustration is.”
Regarding injuries, Atkinson provided an update on Craig Porter, saying, “He’s doing better… starting to ramp it up… hopefully have him available for the West Coast trip.”
The Cavaliers improved to 45-27, powered by Donovan Mitchell’s 42 points and James Harden’s 26. Evan Mobley contributed 19 points, nine rebounds, and six assists.
Orlando dropped to 38-34, with Paolo Banchero scoring 36 points and Tristan da Silva adding 18. The Magic have now lost six straight games.
Cleveland will host the Miami Heat on Wednesday, while Orlando returns home to face the Sacramento Kings on Thursday.
