Kawhi Leonard set a new Clippers franchise record on Saturday against Sacramento by scoring at least 20 points in his 45th consecutive game, surpassing the mark set by Bob McAdoo during the 1974/75 season when the team was known as the Buffalo Braves, according to an Associated Press report.
The milestone was overshadowed by an injury and a loss. Leonard exited with 9:27 remaining in the fourth quarter after suffering what the team later confirmed was a left ankle sprain.
Leonard had already scored 31 points, but the Clippers were unable to complete a comeback without him and fell to the Kings, whose 17-51 record is the worst in the Western Conference. The defeat also snapped the Clippers’ four-game winning streak.
Leonard was injured while defending Kings wing DeMar DeRozan. As he went up to contest the play, Leonard landed awkwardly on DeRozan’s foot and immediately began limping (video link via NBA.com).
The Clippers later confirmed the sprain but have not yet indicated whether Leonard will miss additional time.
The 34-year-old has appeared in 53 games this season and is enjoying one of the most productive years of his 15-year career, averaging 28.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.0 steals while shooting .501/.378/.897.
Leonard has been central to the Clippers’ turnaround after a 6-21 start, as the team has a +4.1 net rating with him on the court compared to -5.9 when he sits.
Los Angeles will host the Spurs on Monday before beginning a three-game road trip.
