LeBron James’ long-term plans remain unclear, and people close to the Lakers star believe he was sincere when he said during NBA All-Star Weekend that he doesn’t yet know what his future holds.

Within the organization, teammates and coaches have quietly speculated about what he might decide, though no clear expectation has emerged, according to people familiar with the situation.

James is on an expiring contract and will become an unrestricted free agent this summer if he chooses to continue playing.

With limited cap space around the league and only a few realistic destinations, his current run with the Lakers, the longest uninterrupted stretch of his career, could come to an end after this season.

A league source told The Athletic that James typically avoids making major career decisions during the emotional grind of a season. His biggest choices in 2010, 2014 and 2018 all came after those seasons were finished.

James addressed the uncertainty himself at All-Star Weekend.

“When I know, you guys will know,” he told reporters. He also added, “I want to live,” when asked about next season.

Since the Lakers committed to building around Luka Doncic, James has taken on less responsibility than at any other point in his career, giving him a new sense of freedom on the court.

Even so, he continues to perform at a high level, including scoring 20 points in the first half of the Lakers’ game against Golden State the night before All-Star Sunday.
