Trae Young and the Washington Wizards are widely anticipated to work out a three-year contract extension during the offseason, according to Marc Stein.
Young has a $49MM player option for next season, but that option would likely be declined if a new deal is finalized.
Stein notes that Atlanta’s reluctance to commit to a fresh extension was a key factor behind the decision to trade the high-scoring guard.
As for this season, Young’s return to the court appears doubtful.
League observers remain skeptical that Washington would risk bringing back the veteran guard, who has been dealing with knee and quad injuries, if it could hurt the team’s draft positioning.
The Wizards currently sit with the NBA’s fourth-worst record and must remain in that range to guarantee their first-round pick stays within the top eight.
The selection is protected only in the top eight; if it falls outside that range, it would be sent to the Knicks.
Young has played 8 seasons for the Hawks. He has averaged 25.2 points, 9.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 493 regular-season games.
He was selected to play in 4 All-Star games.
