The Western Conference-leading Oklahoma City Thunder are adding perimeter depth with the signing of Payton Sandfort to a two-way contract.

NBA insider Shams Charania reported Monday, March 2, that Oklahoma City is promoting Sandfort from its G League affiliate, the OKC Blue, to a two-way NBA deal.

According to Charania, the move was confirmed by Ross Aroyo and Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, and comes less than a year after Sandfort went undrafted out of Iowa.

The 23-year-old wing built his résumé across four collegiate seasons with the Iowa Hawkeyes men’s basketball, finishing his career with 1,619 points in 134 games.

Sandfort averaged 16.7 points and 6.0 rebounds as a senior while logging 31.9 minutes per game.

He shot 35.7% from three-point range over his college career and 89.6% from the free-throw line.

In five G League appearances this season, Sandfort averaged 9.6 points in 21.5 minutes for the OKC Blue.

He attempted 7.4 threes per game in that stretch, reinforcing his identity as a perimeter-oriented scorer despite shooting 29.7% from deep in that limited sample.

Oklahoma City enters the week at 47-15, first in the Western Conference standings.

The Thunder are powered by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 31.8 points and 6.4 assists per game, along with Chet Holmgren’s 17.2 points and 9.0 rebounds.

Two-way contracts allow teams to develop prospects within their system while preserving standard roster spots for playoff eligibility decisions.
