Atlanta Hawks head coach Quin Snyder highlighted Jonathan Kuminga’s composure and readiness after the forward scored a season-high 27 points in his debut Tuesday night against the Washington Wizards. “He really demonstrated that right away… got connected with his teammates and just let the game come to him, which shows a lot of maturity on his part,” Snyder said.
The coach emphasized that Kuminga’s focus was aligned with the team’s broader goals. “The things that we’ve talked about as a team… clearly it was a focal point for him… even to the point where it’s okay to shoot, too,” he explained.
Snyder also addressed Atlanta’s adjustments amid a challenging night offensively. “Whether it’s creating opportunities off our defense or getting second opportunities by crashing the glass… that mitigates some of the shooting if we can get extra possession,” he said, underscoring the Hawks’ strategic focus beyond pure scoring.
He gave insight into rotation decisions and player opportunities. “We’ve tried to give guys opportunities in different combinations… you get an indication of how guys can contribute,” Snyder said, referencing players like Gabe Vincent and Mo Gueye as examples of steady defensive efforts.
Snyder explained the complexities of lineup flexibility. “We don’t have real defined positions across the board… our substitutions a lot of times are about five-man lineups, and if someone’s playing well, you want to leave them in the game,” he said, noting how combinations with Dyson Daniels, CJ McCollum, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker shape in-game decisions.
On Kuminga coming off the bench, Snyder said, “We talked about that with Zach and CJ in that five-man lineup… that’s the way we’ll keep making those decisions… to get the right guys on the floor that the scoreboard reflects that.”
The coach praised Kuminga’s mindset and effort. “I thought he was really focused and I know he’s been hungry to play… you love this game, and sometimes you step back and realize how fortunate we are to be doing what we’re doing,” Snyder said.
Snyder also addressed health concerns for other players, including Alexander-Walker and Jalen Johnson. “As you guys know, we’ll follow their lead… there was enough there to be smart about whether he was going to come back in the game… I don’t think it’s anything serious,” he said regarding Johnson. About Alexander-Walker, Snyder added, “He’s a tough guy… he rolled it, and I thought he might have to come out… and he didn’t want to.”
The Hawks dominated the Wizards 119-98, with Kuminga’s energy and maturity contributing to a decisive win. Snyder concluded, “I think the important thing for him is just what he did tonight… it’s always fun to see one of your guys play well when you know they’ve put in the time and get rewarded for that.”
