Jonathan Kuminga could soon make his first appearance for the Hawks, as the forward has been upgraded to questionable for Tuesday’s game against Washington, according to Brad Rowland of Locked on Hawks.
Anthony Slater of ESPN reports that Kuminga is expected to debut for Atlanta against the Wizards if he is cleared to play.
The 23-year-old has not played since January 22, when he suffered a bone bruise in his left knee following a hyperextension injury.
Atlanta acquired Kuminga alongside Buddy Hield before the trade deadline in the deal that sent Kristaps Porzingis to Golden State, adding athleticism and versatility to the roster.
The former No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 draft experienced a prolonged restricted free agency process with the Warriors last offseason before agreeing to a two-year, $46.8MM contract that includes a $24.3MM team option for next season.
The remaining 23 games of the season could be pivotal for Kuminga’s future, as the team option creates the possibility that he could become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Through 20 games this season, he has averaged 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 23.8 minutes while shooting .454/.321/.742.
Atlanta currently holds a 28-31 record and sits ninth in the Eastern Conference after a recent lineup adjustment helped produce a win over Brooklyn.
The Hawks are projected to reach the play-in tournament for the fifth consecutive season, making Kuminga’s potential return especially timely.
