Former NBA guard Ron Harper praised Kobe Bryant as “about as close to Michael Jordan as you’re ever going to have,” highlighting the Hall of Famer’s work ethic and competitive drive. Harper made the comments during a conversation with Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter, recalling his early years in Los Angeles.
Harper said he first noticed Bryant when he joined the Lakers in 2000. “When I first came to Los Angeles and saw this kid play, he’d already been in the league for two, three years, just watching him, that was his way,” Harper recalled, via HoopsHype.
The Lakers guard emphasized Kobe’s constant pursuit of knowledge. Bryant frequently asked Harper about Jordan, seeking insight on how the Chicago Bulls legend handled situations both on and off the court. Harper remembered telling him, “Relax, dude. You’re okay. You’re working.”
Tracy McGrady added that Bryant’s dedication to learning was a defining trait. “That’s what Kobe was about,” McGrady said. “You give him information, he wants all the information he can get on players who can make him better or players he wants to gain an advantage on.”
Harper noted that Bryant’s curiosity extended beyond stats, focusing on understanding opponents’ tendencies and strategies. His approach mirrored Jordan’s legendary attention to detail, making him one of the most complete competitors in NBA history.
