Donovan Mitchell spoke on SiriusXM NBA Radio about rumors linking LeBron James to a potential return to Cleveland, emphasizing that his focus remains on the present roster and winning a championship.
“As a Bron fan, to be able to be a teammate would obviously be special. But that’s something not in my control. I control what we got here. There’s always going to be reports. It’s natural, it’s going to be a thing,” Mitchell said, via HoopsHype.
“But at the end of the day, to your point, my main focus right now is trying to get this championship. And whatever happens, it happens. And that’s not up to me, that’s not up to anybody, those in the locker room. I’m a big believer in what I can control, but yeah, I mean, it’s LeBron James, right? But at the end of the day, that’s not my focus. … We just traded for James Harden, Dennis Schroder, Keon Ellis, hey, let’s try to find a way to get a ring and go from there.”
James, 41, is on an expiring two-year, $101 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, sparking speculation that he could finish his career in Cleveland. This season, he averages 22.0 points, 7.1 assists and 5.8 rebounds over 36 games.
The Cavaliers are 34-21, fourth in the Eastern Conference, trailing Detroit, Boston and New York. Cleveland has won nine of its last ten games, including a five-game winning streak, positioning them as serious contenders for the playoffs.
Cleveland’s roster has been reinforced with the acquisitions of Harden, Schroder and Ellis.
