Chris Paul has officially announced his retirement from the NBA, bringing an end to a 21-season career. The announcement came shortly after the Toronto Raptors waived the veteran guard on Friday, clearing the way for him to step away from professional basketball.
Paul had initially hoped to continue playing after the Los Angeles Clippers sent him home in early December, and as recently as November he had stated that he planned to retire following the 2025-26 season.
However, circumstances ultimately led him to conclude his career sooner than expected. When the Clippers informed him of their decision earlier in the year, Paul had still hoped to remain with the team and finish the season on the court.
Reflecting on his career, Paul shared an emotional message about his decision to walk away from the game.
“This is it! After over 21 years I’m stepping away from basketball.,” wrote Paul. “As I write this, it’s hard to really know what to feel, but for once – most people would be surprised – I don’t have the answer lol! But, mostly I’m filled with so much joy and gratitude! While this chapter of being an “NBA player” is done, the game of basketball will forever be engrained in the DNA of my life. I’ve been in the NBA for more than half of my life, spanning three decades. It’s crazy even saying that!! Playing basketball for a living has been an unbelievable blessing that also came with lots of responsibility. I embraced it all. The good and the bad. As a lifelong learner, leadership is hard and is not for the weak. Some will like you and many people won’t. But the goal was always the goal, and my intentions were always sincere (Damn, I love competing!!)”
Paul retires as one of the NBA’s 75 Greatest Players, highlighted by four All-NBA First Team selections, five All-NBA Second Team honors, and two All-NBA Third Team appearances.
He also won two Olympic gold medals with Team USA and finished as the league’s MVP runner-up in 2008, cementing his legacy as one of the most accomplished point guards in NBA history.
