Kristaps Porzingis represents the kind of frontcourt addition the Golden State Warriors have pursued for years, according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints. The team views him as a low-risk move with significant upside.
However, the deal sending Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield to Atlanta was more of a secondary option after Golden State explored bigger targets, including Giannis Antetokounmpo, before the trade deadline.
The Warriors were also serious about Trey Murphy III, reportedly offering Kuminga plus two first-round picks. But the New Orleans Pelicans wanted at least three first-rounders and weren’t sold on Kuminga as a long-term centerpiece.
Talks with the Memphis Grizzlies about Jaren Jackson Jr. also took place, involving a package with Kuminga, Hield, and draft compensation.
Golden State hesitated to include Moses Moody or distant picks tied to the post-Stephen Curry era, allowing Utah to top their offer.
Even if Porzingis wasn’t the top choice, the Warriors are optimistic. Coach Steve Kerr said, via Nick Friedell of The Athletic, that Porzingis did three-on-three work this week and could return shortly after the All-Star break in limited minutes.
Porzingis, limited to 17 games this season due to injuries and illness, is upbeat about the opportunity.
“I think it’s a great, great opportunity to turn a new page,” the big man said over the weekend, per Friedell.
“From what I’ve seen, and the conversations I’ve had so far with the medical staff here, and the people that work here, I have to say I’m very surprised and very optimistic. I’m in really, really good hands, if not some of the best hands, and I think that will also add to what I already have in my mind. So, I look forward to really having a surprisingly good post All-Star break.”
