San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson highlighted his team’s defensive execution after a 111-99 comeback win over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday. Johnson credited Victor Wembanyama’s presence at the rim as a key factor in shutting down Houston’s offense.
“You know, Victor is a deterrent at the rim… the job that everybody else was doing around that allowed Victor to be impactful because he wasn’t chasing a bunch of other actions,” Johnson said. He noted the Spurs’ teamwork on defense, saying, “We had quite a bit of… traffic jams, but we did a much better job securing some rebounds, loose balls, 50-50 balls later on in the game.”
Johnson praised Wembanyama’s handling of physical play, adding, “Victor’s competitive response as the game went on got much better… we were a little frantic, rushed early on, but he did a great job with that as well as his teammates.”
On Wembanyama diving for loose balls, Johnson said, “In the second half you felt our physicality, anticipation, relentlessness, pursuit of the basketball raised, and he got on the floor a couple of times… we needed it and we have to play that way.”
The Spurs coach emphasized halftime adjustments. “I did… they yelled at each other. It was a game of physicality, and if we didn’t match it we were going to get punked… it was nice to see we did it enough tonight, especially as the game went on.”
Johnson also praised Stephon Castle’s versatility on defense. “He spent some time guarding Alpi, some time guarding Kevin… that’s his calling card, and tonight he was an all-NBA defender,” Johnson said, citing the challenge of guarding players like Kevin Durant and Alperen Sengun.
He highlighted Dylan Harper’s fourth-quarter contributions, saying, “He’s been trending the last few games… playing the right way, with pace, being aggressive but keeping the game simple… the talent jumps off the page.”
Reflecting on the team’s composure, Johnson added, “We tried to match the physicality from the jump… it felt like we were just a little out of sorts, rushed, but had enough poise that if we strung a couple of good minutes together we could stay in striking distance.”
San Antonio erased a 16-point deficit, with Wembanyama posting 28 points, 16 rebounds, and five blocks. De’Aaron Fox contributed 18 points and eight assists, while Keldon Johnson and Dylan Harper provided crucial scoring off the bench.
The Spurs improved to 32-15, maintaining second place in the Western Conference, while Houston fell to 28-17. San Antonio travels to Charlotte on Saturday, and Houston begins a road trip at Atlanta on Thursday.
