Jaylon Tyson may finally be giving the Cleveland Cavaliers the kind of consistent production they’ve long been seeking at small forward, according to Tony Jones of The Athletic.
Tyson delivered a breakout performance Friday in Philadelphia, pouring in 39 points and setting up the game-winning basket in a narrow road win over the Philadelphia 76ers.
The player said the performance was the result of understanding how to carve out his place at the NBA level.
“I feel like when you get into the NBA, you have to find your niche, the one thing you are good at,” Tyson said.
“Last year, that was my rookie season, so I needed to figure out where I fit in with this team. There are a lot of really good players on the roster, so I needed to figure out what role I had to play.”
He added that the opportunity opened up when the defense focused on Donovan Mitchell.
“Tonight, Philadelphia tried to take Donovan out of the game, so Donovan told me to be ‘California Jaylon.’ That meant for me to go and get a bucket.”
A prolific scorer during his college career at California, Tyson was selected 20th overall in the 2024 draft but entered a Cleveland roster filled with established offensive options.
That adjustment showed during his rookie season, when he averaged just 3.6 points per game while shooting 43 percent from the field.
This year, his role and confidence have grown, with his production jumping to 13.4 points per night on 52.4 percent shooting overall and 47.5 percent from three-point range.
That improvement hasn’t gone unnoticed inside the locker room. Mitchell believes Tyson’s growth fits the true spirit of postseason recognition.
“No disrespect to people who have won it in the past, but it seems like people have won it who were already on a star trajectory,” Mitchell said.
“The award is made for people like Jaylon. He came in, and he has worked on his game, and he’s improved so much since he has been here. He should win the award.”
