The Los Angeles Lakers are attempting to regroup after a frustrating defeat on their home floor against the Charlotte Hornets, a loss that exposed ongoing issues at both ends of the court.

Their task becomes more difficult heading into Saturday’s road game against the Portland Trail Blazers, as ESPN reporter Dave McMenamin notes that the team will be without its most productive offensive player.

Luka Doncic, the league’s top scorer, has been ruled out because of soreness in his left groin, forcing the Lakers to adjust their offensive approach.

The injury report also casts uncertainty over the frontcourt, with Jaxson Hayes dealing with left hamstring tendinopathy and Deandre Ayton nursing soreness in his left knee, leaving both big men questionable for the matchup.

The loss to Charlotte was particularly concerning due to the defensive breakdowns that allowed the Hornets to score at will.

As reported by Janis Carr of The Orange County Register, Charlotte shot an efficient 53.5 percent from the field and knocked down 46.5 percent of its attempts from beyond the arc on its way to 137 points.

That performance prompted veteran guard Marcus Smart to voice his dissatisfaction with the Lakers’ defensive intensity and execution.

“It doesn’t matter who it is. The team or the player doesn’t matter. When they play [against] us, everything goes through the roof,” Smart said. “If they were shooting 20%, they shoot 50% [against us]. It’s unfortunate, but that’s part of the game. It’s tough. We have to figure it out.

“We must play [with] a little bit more urgency on that end, especially, and kind of impose our will. Teams are doing a really good job of picking straight matchups and picking certain plays that they want.”
