Chris Paul recently opened up about his uncertain future during an appearance on Prime Sports’ Good Sports with Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson, making it clear that he isn’t ready for his career to fade out quietly.
Reflecting on his current situation with the Los Angeles Clippers and the possibility that his playing days may be nearing the end, Paul emphasized that the way things have unfolded doesn’t sit right with him.
“I still feel like I’ve got more to give,” he said. “I put in the work every day, and when you love something this much, you don’t want it to just stop without meaning.”
Paul explained that while he has appreciated the extra time he’s been able to spend with his family, particularly attending his kids’ games, the competitive fire hasn’t gone away.
“I’ve enjoyed being present at home, no doubt about that,” he said. “But part of me still wakes up thinking about the game, thinking about competing, thinking about being in those moments again.”
As of now, Paul admitted he doesn’t know where or how he’d like his career to conclude.
“I don’t even know what jersey I’d want to finish in,” he said. “I just know I don’t want it to feel unfinished.”
Paul has not appeared in a game for the Clippers since December 1.
During an East Coast road trip, the organization made the decision to send the veteran guard home, with the front office and coaching staff agreeing it was best for all sides while his roster status remained unresolved.
Reports have indicated that tension had grown within the locker room, stemming from Paul frequently challenging head coach Ty Lue and clashing at times with fellow veterans.
“Everybody wants to win, but sometimes voices don’t align,” Paul said. “That doesn’t mean the passion isn’t real.”
Despite the separation, the veteran point guard is still under contract with the Clippers.
If he isn’t moved before the February 5 trade deadline, the expectation around the league is that Los Angeles will waive him, opening the door to free agency.
Last summer, Paul was selective about potential destinations, limiting his list to teams close to his Los Angeles home.
Whether he would expand those preferences if he becomes available remains unclear.
“I’ve always valued being close to my family,” Paul said. “But when you love the game, you have to weigh everything.”
