Trae Young’s contract includes a 15 percent trade bonus, and there has been no reporting to suggest that the bonus will be excluded as part of the deal.

Still, the structure of NBA contracts places clear limits on how that bonus can be applied.

Trade bonuses do not carry over into option years, and league rules also prevent any incentive from pushing a player’s salary beyond the maximum allowed for that season.

Young’s current cap figure is $45,999,660, while his maximum salary for the year is set at $46,394,100.

Because the difference between those two numbers is relatively small, only a portion of the bonus can actually be added to his pay.

As a result, even if the trade kicker is fully honored within league guidelines, the financial impact is modest.

Instead of receiving the full percentage increase, Young would see his salary rise by $394,440, reflecting the narrow margin between his existing cap hit and the maximum salary threshold.
