Once the deal that sends Trae Young to the Washington Wizards becomes official, conversations about a contract extension are expected to remain in the background rather than taking center stage.

According to reporting from ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, both sides are comfortable letting time do some of the work before committing to anything long term.

The thinking, as outlined in the report, is that Young and the Wizards want space to see how things feel on and off the court.

“This isn’t something either side feels pressure to rush,” the situation was described, with the emphasis on understanding chemistry, role, and direction before locking into future years.

That evaluation period could easily stretch into the 2026/27 season, especially since Young controls a $49 million player option for that year. If he prefers security over free agency, that option gives him a built-in safety net.

For an extension to happen sooner rather than later, Young would have to walk away from that option and replace it with a new contract beginning in 2026/27.

Under league rules, such a deal could add up to three additional seasons beyond the current one. “It’s a path that exists, but it requires a clear sense of confidence from both sides,” the situation was characterized.

If Young instead exercises his option in June, another door opens. By doing so, he would still be eligible to negotiate an extension during the following offseason, this time starting in 2027/28 and potentially adding as many as four new years onto his stay.

In short, the Wizards and Young have multiple timelines available, and for now, patience appears to be the shared approach.
