Spencer Dinwiddie and FC Bayern Munich have mutually agreed to part ways, less than three months after the veteran guard joined the German champions. Bayern announced the move Sunday, citing personal reasons that required Dinwiddie to return to the United States.
“At the beginning of the new year, Bayern’s basketball team must once again adjust its roster: Spencer Dinwiddie will no longer play for the German champions,” the club said. Dinwiddie had been granted leave before Christmas due to a serious illness in his family.
“I would like to thank the organization, the team, and the fans. Despite the recent challenging phase of the season, I felt very comfortable in Munich. Unfortunately, I am currently not in a position to play,” Dinwiddie said. Bayern sports director Dragan Tarlac added, “Sometimes other things are more important than sport. Health comes above everything else, and we sincerely hope that everything will turn out well for Spencer and his family in 2026.”
The 32-year-old joined Bayern in October, marking his first professional experience in Europe after a lengthy NBA career. In 11 EuroLeague games, he averaged 11.7 points and 2.9 assists, ranking as Bayern’s second-leading scorer behind Andi Obst (12.6 points per game). In the Basketball Bundesliga, Dinwiddie averaged 13 points and four assists across five appearances.
During his short stint, Dinwiddie played a key role in Bayern’s rotation, starting in nine of 11 EuroLeague games and logging an average of 23 minutes per contest. Despite his contributions, the team struggled in Europe, sitting 18th in the 20-team standings with a 6-13 record and a -103 point differential.
Bayern’s roster will now adjust ahead of Wednesday’s home matchup against Kosner Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz. The club expressed gratitude for Dinwiddie’s efforts, while the player emphasized the priority of family over basketball.
