Golden State Warriors guard De’Anthony Melton highlighted his team’s defensive focus after Monday’s 120-107 win over the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center. “Activity… we kind of locked in on the game plan and understood what they had going on through the last three quarters,” Melton said.
Melton emphasized the importance of closing out the game after a loss in Toronto. “It was important… it’s stuff we got to work on going forward… we don’t want to get in a situation down the road where we’re trying to fight for certain positions and get to the playoffs,” he explained.
The 27-year-old noted his own conditioning and ability to handle minutes. “My body’s been holding up… it’s just about stacking days and strengthening… taking it day by day,” Melton said regarding his 24 minutes of play.
Controlling pace was a key factor for the veteran guard. “We love it… stoppage of play helps us get our defenses set, especially with young teams that like to run up and down,” he said.
Melton also praised Stephen Curry’s consistency and leadership. “We love it… he does so much for our team and the organization… we got to respect everything he’s doing and contribute in the ways we can,” he said.
Bench production was another highlight for Melton. “It feels amazing… we have a deep team and I trust everybody that goes on our floor… putting the ball in the basket is important to give these other guys some relief,” he said, referencing the 50-27 advantage in bench scoring.
Golden State recovered from a slow start, trailing by 13 in the first quarter, before Curry scored 10 in the third to give the Warriors an 89-85 edge. Jimmy Butler added 21 points, including 11 for 12 from the free-throw line, to help seal the victory.
Trayce Jackson-Davis contributed 11 points, while Gary Payton II, Will Richard, and Melton each scored 10. Brooklyn’s Michael Porter Jr. led all scorers with 27 points, and rookie Egor Demin added 23.
The Warriors improved to 17-16, continuing a three-game road trip at Charlotte on Wednesday, while Brooklyn dropped to 10-20 and hosts Houston on Thursday. Melton emphasized that the team’s depth and disciplined defensive execution will be key as Golden State looks to stabilize its season.
