The Golden State Warriors have reportedly explored the idea of pursuing a trade for Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis, revisiting interest they’ve shown in the past.
While the Warriors have admired Davis for years, they’ve rarely been in a realistic position to put together a deal that would make sense financially or competitively.
At the same time, it remains unclear whether Dallas is even open to moving Davis before the February 5 trade deadline.
Since parting ways with former general manager Nico Harrison, the Mavericks have taken a measured approach to roster decisions, avoiding rushed or reactionary moves.
From Golden State’s side, the financial challenge is significant. Davis is earning $54.1 million this season, and the Warriors are currently just $264,000 below the second-apron hard cap.
That leaves very little flexibility and makes salary matching a complicated puzzle.
Any serious offer would almost certainly have to include Jonathan Kuminga, who carries a $22.5 million salary. Even then, additional contracts would be required to make the numbers work.
That opens the possibility of Draymond Green being included in discussions, a scenario that would represent a major shift for the franchise and a difficult decision for general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr.
