There is a growing sense around the league that San Antonio is unlikely to seriously pursue a trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo, even if Milwaukee were to make the two-time MVP available.
While the Spurs have the draft assets and young talent to put together a competitive offer, the organization is strongly committed to its developing core and hesitant to dismantle it for an older superstar.
Victor Wembanyama is considered completely untouchable, and the same stance applies to rookie Dylan Harper, whom the Spurs have shown no interest in moving since drafting him with the No. 2 pick.
That mindset also extends to reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.
“I cannot tell you how much the Spurs loved Castle when they got him,” Windhorst said. “They are convinced that he is the perfect guy to have with Victor. … They love everything about his make-up, the way he competes, and his willingness to improve.”
Although Windhorst noted that very few players are truly off-limits in the NBA, he made clear how unlikely a Castle trade would be.
“I would be stunned if they gave Castle away for almost anything,” he said.
For now, San Antonio appears content building patiently around its young stars rather than pushing all its chips in for a blockbuster deal.
