Stephen Curry admitted he never wanted to see Klay Thompson leave Golden State and said he would welcome the idea of reuniting with his longtime teammate in the future.
Speaking with ESPN before the Mavericks’ Christmas Day visit to the Bay, Curry reflected on Thompson’s departure and the bond that still exists between them.
“I wish he was still here,” Curry told ESPN.
Thompson left the Warriors after 13 seasons, joining Dallas in 2024 on a three-year, $50 million sign-and-trade. His exit ended one of the most successful partnerships in NBA history, as Curry, Thompson, and Draymond Green won four championships together and helped define an era in Golden State.
Behind the scenes, Thompson’s departure was complicated. During the offseason, the Warriors prioritized other moves and asked Thompson to wait, but no offer followed. Those close to him said he felt subtly pushed aside rather than directly told he was no longer a priority.
“This was a guy who felt he left it all out there for [team owner] Joe [Lacob] and the organization, and was then viewed as damaged goods,” one league source told ESPN.
Despite the split, Curry made an effort to keep the relationship intact. He spent time with Thompson in Dallas earlier this year, organizing a dinner with Green and assistant coach Chris DeMarco that provided a sense of closure.
“We didn’t need to address any feelings or his departure or anything like that,” Green said. “It was friends kicking it.”
Curry said he would push for a reunion if the opportunity ever arises and hopes Thompson eventually retires as a Warrior.
“If that time comes and that conversation is had, of course I’m calling him and saying, ‘We want you back,’” Curry said.
Thompson has shown improvement in Dallas after a slow start, shooting over 40 percent from three in the past month, though the Mavericks are expected to explore his trade market.
When asked about a possible return to Golden State someday, Thompson kept his answer open-ended.
“I don’t know,” Thompson said. “That’s a long ways away. I don’t know what the future holds.”
