Zion Williamson made his return Sunday after sitting out five straight games due to a right hip adductor strain, and his comeback came with a wrinkle he had never experienced before.

For the first time in his NBA career, Williamson didn’t start, instead coming off the bench as the Pelicans carefully managed his workload.

Interim coach James Borrego opted for a minutes restriction to ensure Williamson would have enough in the tank to finish the game if needed.

Williamson explained that the decision was discussed in advance and made sense given the circumstances.

“It was a game plan that allowed me to close the game, with my body being used to playing certain minutes of a quarter,” he said.

“So you know he walked me through it. I didn’t have a problem with it because it allowed me to close the game. The rhythm did feel pretty good, but most of all I’m glad we got the win.”

Health has been an ongoing challenge for Williamson, who has already missed 16 games this season due to four different injuries. When available, though, his impact is clear.

He’s producing 21.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game, numbers that underscore how important he is for a New Orleans team trying to climb out of a 5-22 hole.

Williamson acknowledged the frustration that comes with repeated setbacks but pointed to the work he’s put in behind the scenes.

“Injuries suck, there’s no other way to put it,” he said. “Rehabbing’s not fun either. But over the summer, me putting that work in my body, it allows me – if something does happen – it’s nothing that keeps me out a super, long time. I’m able to rehab at a faster but more efficient rate.”
