
De’Aaron Fox addressed his former team, the Sacramento Kings, on Monday, reflecting on his departure and current situation with the San Antonio Spurs.
“I don’t really have anything to say,” Fox told Marc J. Spears of Andscape. “It is what it is. I wish [Keegan] Murray the best. Whether that is rebuilding, I want him to be in the best situation for him. The grass is greener on this side.”
Fox acknowledged his time with the Kings, emphasizing that his focus now is on maintaining a competitive position in the playoffs. “We go to the playoffs and after that you want to build upon that,” he said. “And that doesn’t mean going from the third seed to the first seed. It just means continuing to be a playoff team. I didn’t feel like we were there.”
The 27-year-old point guard was traded to the Spurs on February 3, 2025, in a three-team deal that sent Zach LaVine and multiple draft picks to Sacramento.
Through 17 appearances with the Spurs this season, Fox has averaged 19.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 6.8 assists, providing a stabilizing presence for a team currently 18-7. His production has complemented Victor Wembanyama’s 25.8 points and 12.6 rebounds per game, forming the foundation of San Antonio’s strong start.
Fox’s future in San Antonio is secured with a four-year, $229 million maximum contract extension signed on August 4, keeping him with the Spurs through the 2029–30 season. The deal, which carries no player option in the final year
Fox pinpointed the summer of 2024 as the turning point in his relationship with the Kings, saying, “Everything started going bad that summer. I’m in a place where I want to be now.” He emphasized that the move wasn’t solely about team success but about finding a better environment for personal and professional growth.
During his tenure with Sacramento, Fox helped lead the team to playoff contention, averaging 19.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 6.8 assists across 26 games before the trade. Key teammates included DeMar DeRozan, Domantas Sabonis, and Zach LaVine, with Keegan Murray developing into a primary piece for the rebuilding Kings.
