Minnesota has begun exploring options to upgrade its backcourt and has checked in with Chicago about Coby White, according to reports, via HoopsRumors.com.
While the trade deadline is still some distance away, the Timberwolves are believed to be interested in adding another ball-handler sooner rather than later.
The Bulls, despite a rough stretch following a hot start, are not seen as eager to rush into major moves at this stage.
The Wolves’ interest reflects uncertainty at point guard. Mike Conley has shifted into a reduced role, Donte DiVincenzo is not a natural lead guard, and rookie Rob Dillingham is still developing, leaving Anthony Edwards to handle much of the playmaking.
Minnesota would prefer to ease that burden by adding another creator.
White, while not a pure point guard, brings scoring and playmaking ability and is coming off a strong season offensively.
He is on an expiring $12.9 million contract and is unlikely to agree to an extension before free agency, which could eventually push Chicago to consider its options.
Trade ideas have included DiVincenzo, Terrence Shannon Jr., and draft assets, though Minnesota’s lack of a tradable first-round pick complicates talks.
Compared to pursuing a max-salary star, White’s contract and role make him a more realistic target for the Wolves, especially given the salary-matching challenges tied to bigger names.
