Sacramento Kings head coach Doug Christie addressed the team’s struggles after a 136-105 defeat to the Denver Nuggets on Thursday, noting the energy drop as a key factor.
“It felt like an energy thing… we got off to a decent start and then 41 points in any quarter is just too much,” Christie said, pointing to the 77 points allowed in the first half as evidence of the team losing control.
Christie emphasized player development as a primary focus despite the loss, highlighting the opportunities given to younger players like Nique Clifford and Maxime Raynaud. “These are high-level learning environments… whether it’s the speed of the game, the physicality of the game, or the tricks of the big guys, we’re going to have to live through some of that with them for sure,” he said.
On Keegan Murray’s progression, Christie praised the forward’s resilience and shot selection. “Keegan is a warrior… he defends the best guy, switches off, takes any challenge you throw in front of him… I ain’t worried about shots. The kid makes shots,” Christie stated.
Christie also addressed the younger guards’ confidence and physicality on the court. “I want you to play confident… but also approach it with physicality. When they respond, you feel what that’s like. Don’t back down. We got you,” he said, outlining the balance between aggressiveness and team cohesion.
Devin Carter’s recent return from the G League was another point of focus, with Christie noting the guard’s readiness and aggressiveness. “He looked confident and comfortable and played very aggressive… this is part of being a young player and working your way through,” Christie explained.
Despite the blowout, Christie stressed the team’s unity. “In family, we stay together and we lock arms… that part is the rough and the bumpy heart,” he said, highlighting the importance of maintaining team cohesion amid struggles and learning experiences.
The Kings remain at 6-19, set to visit the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday, while Denver continues its dominant road form with an 18-6 record, hosting the Houston Rockets on Monday.
