During the offseason, the Milwaukee Bucks quietly allowed the New York Knicks a private window to explore potential Giannis Antetokounmpo trade frameworks.
This behind-closed-doors opportunity was granted because Antetokounmpo had let it be known that, if he were ever to be moved, his preferred destination was New York.
Although the Knicks put forward multiple proposals, those discussions eventually stalled and produced no agreement between the two franchises.
If Antetokounmpo were to request a trade during the regular season, that arrangement changes entirely.
The Knicks would no longer have any exclusive access, and even if the superstar maintains a preference for New York, Milwaukee would open the bidding to all teams across the league.
As one source put it, “The writing is on the wall,” reflecting growing doubt about a long-term pairing between the Bucks and their franchise cornerstone.
Complicating matters further, Milwaukee has extremely limited pathways to reshape the roster in a meaningful way.
The team holds only one first-round pick they can move and lacks the kind of promising young players typically needed to headline trade packages.
As a result, their ability to upgrade the supporting cast around Antetokounmpo has become increasingly constrained.
