New York Knicks head coach Mike Brown highlighted his team’s defensive focus and offensive execution after a 119-104 win over the Charlotte Hornets at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.

Brown emphasized protecting the paint and crashing the offensive boards as keys to the victory. “We did a nice job protecting the paint… we had 30 second-chance points on 13 offensive rebounds,” he said.

Karl-Anthony Towns led the way with 35 points, 18 rebounds, and five assists, logging just one turnover in 39 minutes. “He played 39 minutes… one turnover. That was a phenomenal game by him,” Brown noted.

The coach also praised the team’s ball movement and transition game. “We had 42 baskets, 28 assists, 22 fast-break points. A good win, especially coming off a back-to-back,” Brown said, highlighting the team’s resilience after a tough loss in Boston the previous night.

Brown singled out Ariel Hukporti as the team’s defensive player of the game despite limited minutes. “He had zero defensive rebounds and fouled out… but his impact was huge. Hit a couple of blocks, 50/50 balls,” Brown explained.

When asked about maintaining leads, Brown stressed the importance of responding to opponents’ runs. “It’s a game of runs… the NBA is long and your opponent’s going to eventually make a run. To stretch it and hold on, that’s unusual for the NBA,” he said.

The Knicks overcame a 26-9 Charlotte run in the second quarter, with Jalen Brunson’s buzzer-beating three giving the team momentum at halftime. “It gave us momentum going into the half… our guys responded,” Brown said.

On lineup decisions, Brown credited his staff for helping shape his approach. “I rely on my staff… if my whole staff is telling me something, then I better open my eyes and ears and follow their lead,” he said regarding starting Josh Hart.

The Knicks improved to 14-7 overall and 11-1 at home, continuing one of the league’s strongest early-season home runs. Brown noted the importance of learning from both wins and losses. “Sometimes you’re not going to win every game… learn from it, don’t get down,” he said.

New York will return to action on Friday against the Utah Jazz, aiming to extend their home dominance, while Charlotte travels to face the Toronto Raptors.
