Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv continued to build its roster for the next Turkish Airlines Euroleague season by adding former All-Euroleague forward Sonny Weems on a two-year deal, the club announced Tuesday.
Weems (1.98 meters, 29 years old) split time between Phoenix and Philadelphia in the NBA last season, averaging 2.5 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 43 games. Previously, Weems played four consecutive seasons in Euroleague. He made his Euroleague debut with Zalgiris Kaunas in the 2011-12 season before joining CSKA Moscow, where he played for three more years. He reached three consecutive Final Fours with CSKA, earning All-Euroleague first-team honors in the 2013-14 season.
Weems has averaged 13.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 98 Euroleague career games. With Zalgiris and CSKA, he won three VTB United League titles, lifted both the Russian and the Lithuanian League trophies, and won a Lithuanian Cup title. Earlier in his pro career, Weems also played for Denver and Toronto in the NBA, and helped Colorado take the D-League title in 2009.
“I am delighted to join Maccabi after playing against them many times at the highest level of European basketball,” Weems said. “I am excited to return to the Euroleague, particularly with the new format in which all major teams will play each other. I cannot wait to get to Tel Aviv and start getting ready for the new season.”
