Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla highlighted the balance of leadership and effort after a narrow 117-115 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday at Rocket Arena.

“Payton puts a ton of pressure on himself… you just always know when he’s not at his best, he’s going to bounce back quickly,” Mazzulla said, noting Pritchard’s season-high 42 points and aggressive approach despite early foul trouble.

Mazzulla also praised Jaylen Brown’s playmaking, noting his ability to facilitate for teammates while maintaining scoring efficiency. “To me it’s just having a great balance of understanding when it’s his time versus when it’s time to make a play,” he said, referencing Brown’s fourth career triple-double with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists.

The Celtics coach emphasized the value of depth, especially with a short-handed roster. “X [Xavier Tillman] is the ultimate professional… you can trust he’ll execute exactly what we want,” Mazzulla said, highlighting the contributions from role players like Jordan Walsh and Tillman in crucial moments.

Mazzulla addressed the team’s ability to overcome turnovers and sloppy early execution. “The point was we were playing with a level of effort and connectivity… the other stuff comes throughout the game,” he explained, pointing to Boston’s focus and composure despite missing Jayson Tatum and resting Derrick White.

He also stressed the importance of execution in late-game situations. “At the end of games, you don’t want to turn the ball over. You want to fight for a great shot… spacing and matchup recognition were intentional,” Mazzulla said, praising key plays by Pritchard and Brown down the stretch.

In the game, Pritchard went 15-of-22 from the field and 6-of-11 from three, while Brown’s all-around performance helped Boston withstand a late Cleveland rally. Donovan Mitchell hit consecutive threes to bring the Cavaliers within two points in the final 20 seconds, but Pritchard’s free throws and defensive stops sealed the win.

Cleveland’s Evan Mobley led all scorers with 27 points and 14 rebounds, with Darius Garland adding 21 points and eight assists, yet the Cavaliers fell short despite hitting 20 threes. Jordan Walsh contributed career highs with 14 points and 11 rebounds, providing Boston with needed support off the bench.

Boston will return home to face the New York Knicks on Tuesday, while Cleveland travels to Indiana to meet the Pacers on Monday.
