Deandre Ayton emphasized the importance of energy and consistency following the Los Angeles Lakers’ 133-121 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday at Crypto.com Arena.
“I really got to just lock in on this defensive end… everything really comes together when I stay consistent and generate energy,” Ayton said, reflecting on his role as a stabilizing presence for the team.
Ayton acknowledged the impact of his teammates on his performance. “Luka’s going to do Luka, Bron going to do Bron… they generate off me a little bit, and I just bring that energy and pride to the game,” he explained, crediting the duo for creating offensive opportunities.
The center also discussed the team’s cohesion and maturity. “It’s togetherness… when things don’t go our way, the experience and leadership around us keep everyone focused on the task at hand,” Ayton said, noting the group’s ability to stay composed amid challenges.
Despite a minor ankle tweak, Ayton said he felt ready for the Lakers’ back-to-back schedule. “It was just a little tweak… JJ [Redick] set me up in the game, so it was good timing and a cool down after the game,” he said.
Ayton praised the way Los Angeles shares offensive responsibilities. “The attention Luka and Austin Reaves draw opens the floor… it puts us in rhythm as role players to help them out,” he noted, underlining how the Lakers maximize spacing and player movement.
In the game, Ayton recorded 22 points and 12 rebounds, complementing Luka Doncic’s 34 points and Austin Reaves’ 33 points. Rui Hachimura added 14 points as the Lakers extended their winning streak to seven games.
Los Angeles led 46-27 and 77-57 through the first half, tying for the fifth-highest opening quarter in franchise history, while New Orleans, without Zion Williamson and Trey Murphy III, rallied in the third quarter but fell short.
The Lakers aim to continue their momentum against the Phoenix Suns on Monday, while the Pelicans look to end a losing streak versus the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday.
