The Boston Celtics have signed guard Hayden Gray to a deal, according to Michael Scotto, adding another player to their roster ahead of training camp.
Scotto reported Wednesday, September 23, that Boston reached an agreement with Gray, who finished the 2025-26 season with the Utah Jazz after beginning the campaign with the Maine Celtics.
Gray went undrafted out of UC San Diego and spent most of last season in the G League with Maine. He appeared in 48 games for the Celtics’ affiliate, averaging 9.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists in 27.8 minutes per game.
The guard shot 41.7% from the field and 33.2% from three-point range while also averaging 2.1 steals. His 5.8 assists per game were his most notable statistical contribution during his first professional season.
Gray briefly reached the NBA with Utah, playing one game for the Jazz. He logged 25 minutes and finished with six points, one assist and one steal while shooting 2-for-3 from the field. He also made his only free-throw attempt.
The opportunity in Utah came after Gray had developed his game at UC San Diego. As a junior in 2024-25, he averaged 11.1 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 33 games while shooting 47.1% from the field and 40.7% from three-point range.
That season followed a sophomore campaign in which Gray averaged 8.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 30 games.
Gray now returns to Boston after spending the majority of his rookie professional season with the Maine Celtics. His familiarity with the organization could be useful as he competes for an opportunity with the NBA team during training camp.
The Celtics enter camp following a major offseason reshaping. Boston traded Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers after Brown averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists during the 2025-26 season and finished sixth in MVP voting.
The Celtics received Paul George and future draft assets in the deal, while also adding Mitchell Robinson, Mike Conley and Chris Cenac Jr. to a group led by Jayson Tatum, Derrick White and Payton Pritchard.
With Boston operating close to the first apron and carrying a largely established roster, Gray’s addition gives the organization another guard option as it evaluates its available depth before the regular season.
