Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade remains in limbo over Zeljko Obradovic’s next move, as the legendary coach weighs whether to return to the bench following his recent resignation. The club postponed a scheduled meeting on Saturday that was expected to clarify his position, leaving fans and officials waiting.
SportKlub reported that during a Friday discussion, Obradovic confronted club president Ostoja Mijailovic over remarks he allegedly made to a board member, fueling tension behind the scenes. Mijailovic reportedly told the board member, “Don’t worry, the pressure will ease after the first win of the new coach,” a comment that Obradovic found unsettling.
The executive board has formally rejected Obradovic’s resignation, signaling its desire for him to remain at the helm. President Mijailovic offered him full authority to reshape the roster if he chooses, highlighting the club’s commitment to supporting the coach in implementing necessary changes.
Public support for Obradovic has been immense. Thousands of fans greeted the team at Belgrade’s Nikola Tesla Airport earlier this week, with one supporter calling him “our patriarch,” reflecting his deep connection to Partizan’s fanbase. Despite the fanfare, Obradovic has yet to retract his resignation or make a formal commitment to stay.
The uncertainty has also affected team preparations, as Saturday’s training session was left without a confirmed leader. Partizan’s expanded board will reconvene on Monday, when a definitive decision is expected. The club’s next game is scheduled for Thursday against Bayern Munich in the Belgrade Arena, with Partizan sitting 18th in the EuroLeague standings at 4-9.
Officials have emphasized their willingness to back Obradovic in a full roster overhaul if he opts to continue, demonstrating trust in his vision to improve results. The coach’s decision is anticipated to set the tone for the remainder of Partizan’s season.
With both the board and the passionate fanbase urging him to remain, all eyes are on Obradovic as he deliberates his next step, which could determine Partizan’s immediate future in European basketball.
