Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid has been fined $50,000 by the NBA for making a “lewd” gesture during the team’s 109–108 loss to the Boston Celtics on October 31 at Xfinity Mobile Arena, the league announced. The penalty was issued by Executive Vice President and Head of Basketball Operations James Jones.
The incident occurred with 7:08 remaining in the first quarter when Embiid made the gesture following a foul call. The 2023 MVP’s actions were immediately reviewed by the league office, which deemed them inappropriate for public display.
Embiid responded to the fine on social media, expressing frustration with what he viewed as inconsistency in officiating standards. “Yall better start fining the refs for doing the ‘Lewd,’ ‘blocking foul’ gesture since I’m not allowed to do it #NFL,” he wrote on X, sharing a gif of a referee making a similar motion.
The gesture overshadowed an otherwise efficient performance by Embiid, who recorded 20 points on 6-of-13 shooting, along with six rebounds and three assists. Despite his contribution, Philadelphia fell by one point to Boston, losing on a late sequence that sealed their second defeat of the season.
Through four games, Embiid has averaged 17.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists while shooting 46 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from three-point range. His minutes have been closely managed by head coach Nick Nurse as he works toward full conditioning after missing time in training camp.
Philadelphia, now 3–3 on the season, has leaned heavily on Tyrese Maxey’s scoring surge, with the guard averaging 33.7 points per game. Embiid remains central to the team’s success, though his availability and composure continue to draw scrutiny early in the campaign.
