The Memphis Grizzlies are facing growing uncertainty surrounding their star player, Ja Morant, as internal tensions appear to be escalating between the guard and head coach Tuomas Iisalo.
According to NBA insider Shams Charania, Morant has been suspended for Sunday’s game against the Toronto Raptors following a locker room confrontation with Iisalo. This comes after a highly publicized disagreement between the two following Memphis’ 117–112 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Tensions between Morant and Iisalo reportedly peaked after the coach questioned Morant’s leadership and effort during a postgame locker room meeting. The 26-year-old guard’s response was described as “inappropriate and dismissive,” according to Charania. The confrontation was triggered by frustrations with the team’s performance and Iisalo’s rotation and play-calling decisions, which Morant reportedly disagreed with.
In the wake of the incident, Grizzlies officials decided to suspend Morant for one game, a move that highlights the increasing strain within the organization. Morant is expected to return to the court on Monday when Memphis hosts the Detroit Pistons.
Morant’s frustrations were evident in his performance during the Lakers game. The guard struggled mightily, finishing with just eight points on 3-of-14 shooting, including an 0-for-6 night from three-point range. His visibly frustrated body language was a topic of discussion, as he walked away from the bench during a timeout in the second half.
After the game, Morant offered minimal comment to reporters, deflecting questions about the team’s struggles by telling them, “Go ask the coaching staff.”
The situation in Memphis has drawn attention from rival NBA teams. As Marc Stein reported on The Stein Line, multiple teams are keeping a close watch on the ongoing dynamics between Morant and the Grizzlies. This interest stems from the uncertainty surrounding Morant’s long-term future with Memphis, especially after reports surfaced earlier this year suggesting that the team might not offer him the expected contract extension during the offseason.

Morant’s future with the Grizzlies has seemed in flux since the June draft, with sources suggesting that the team could be shifting its focus away from making him the centerpiece. Rival teams are now monitoring how his relationship with Iisalo and the rest of the organization develops over the next few weeks, as this situation could have significant ramifications for both the Grizzlies and Morant’s future in Memphis.
Despite the off-court distractions, Morant has put up solid numbers in the early part of the season, averaging 20.8 points, 6.7 assists, and 3.3 rebounds over six games. However, his shooting efficiency has been an issue, with a field goal percentage of just 40.6%. The Grizzlies, currently sitting at 3–3 for the season, are still adjusting to Iisalo’s new system, which may be contributing to the team’s inconsistent play.
