Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd praised rookie Cooper Flagg following Wednesday’s 125-92 season-opening loss to the San Antonio Spurs, highlighting the 18-year-old’s potential despite a challenging debut.
“Cooper played within himself,” Kidd said, noting that Flagg took what the defense gave him while making plays and staying active on both ends of the floor. “He’s one that’s not going to just shoot every time he touches it. He tries to play the game the right way.”
Flagg finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, hitting his first bucket on the opening possession of the second half. Kidd emphasized that the box score doesn’t fully capture the rookie’s performance. “No one in this room is sitting in his shoes,” he added, praising Flagg’s composure and work ethic.
Kidd expressed confidence in Flagg’s long-term potential, stating, “He’s going to be one of the best players to play this game.” He also highlighted the young forward’s ability to run the floor and contribute defensively, calling him “comfortable” and noting his high-level talent for both offense and defense.
While Dallas struggled offensively, with the Mavericks failing to create consistent opportunities for teammates, Kidd emphasized that the solution is simple. “We didn’t have trouble. We just didn’t pass the ball,” he said. “Just make a play for a teammate.”
The Mavericks’ defense was also exploited by San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama, who recorded 40 points and 15 rebounds in his first regular-season game since February.
Kidd noted the importance of rebounding and limiting second-chance points, acknowledging that giving up 31 fast-break points was a major factor in the loss.
Despite the defeat, Kidd remained optimistic about Flagg’s development. He praised the rookie’s balance and strength, noting that the 7-foot forward stays on his feet and delivers consistently on drives and jumpers. Kidd said watching tape from games like this will help Flagg improve, especially when facing top-tier talent like Wembanyama again in future matchups.
Kidd also commended undrafted guard Ryan Nembhard, who earned rotation minutes in the opener. “He was good, trying to get everybody organized and run the show,” Kidd said. “When the shot presented itself, he took it.”
Flagg and the Mavericks will have the opportunity to rebound as they prepare for their next game against the Washington Wizards on Friday, while San Antonio travels to face the New Orleans Pelicans.
