Zion Williamson led the New Orleans Pelicans with 27 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and five steals in a 128-122 season-opening loss to the Memphis Grizzlies at FedExForum. Despite the defeat, Williamson highlighted the impact of rookie Jeremiah Fears.

“Even when the offense broke down, he did it three or four times where he just made something shake and got to the rack or got a short jumper,” Williamson said. “His name says it all. The brother is fearless.”

Fears, who turned 19 just last week, impressed with his composure in his first official NBA game. Williamson noted his growth through training camp and preseason, emphasizing the importance of his contributions in critical moments.

Williamson reflected on his own performance, admitting a slow start but finding his rhythm late in the second quarter. He also noted the team’s struggles in the third, when Memphis outscored New Orleans 41-22, which he identified as pivotal in the loss.

The game featured a reunion of sorts as Williamson faced former AAU teammate Ja Morant, who scored 35 points and delivered a crucial basket with under 33 seconds remaining. “In the midst of the game, we’re competitors,” Williamson said. “Postgame, talking to his pops, it definitely means a lot to see where we are now compared to ninth and tenth grade.”

Williamson also set the tone defensively, focusing on influencing shots even when opponents score. “If I can always influence the offensive player to take off-balance shots like that, even if they hit them, I think it matters,” he said.

He acknowledged the role of teammates like Jordan Poole, noting his competitiveness and potential to emulate Allen Iverson’s style. “I think with the Iverson cuts that we can set up for Poole, he can definitely take advantage of those things,” Williamson said.

Despite falling short, the Pelicans showed promise with contributions from Herbert Jones, Poole, and Fears, each adding 17 points, and rookie Cedric Coward scoring 14 on flawless shooting. The team will look to build on these performances when hosting the San Antonio Spurs on Friday.

Memphis capitalized on a dominant third quarter, with Jaren Jackson Jr. adding 18 points and six blocks, while Kentavious Caldwell-Pope contributed 15. The Grizzlies will continue their home schedule against the Miami Heat the same night.
