Atlanta survived Miami 119-118 in overtime during a preseason battle at State Farm Arena on Monday. The Hawks moved to 2-1, while the Heat slipped to 0-5.
Atlanta opened a 35-24 lead after the first quarter. Jacob Toppin tallied four points with a layup, and Keaton Wallace added five including a fadeaway.
Asa Newell chipped in five points via a layup and free throw. Norman Powell paced Miami with six points on two threes.
Miami erased the deficit in the second, outscoring Atlanta 30-19 to trail 54-54 at halftime. Powell reached 11 points with a layup and free throws.
Bam Adebayo grabbed six points and three rebounds. No key absences marked either side.
The Hawks rebuilt a cushion in the third with a 22-16 edge for a 76-70 lead. Toppin added eight points including a dunk and layup.
Newell hit 11 points by quarter’s end. Adebayo totaled 13 points and nine rebounds.
Miami surged back in the fourth, topping Atlanta 32-26 to force overtime at 102-102. Powell finished with 17 points on 4-of-14 shooting.
Toppin logged 18 points in regulation with two threes. The overtime session featured Atlanta’s 17-16 edge.
Houstan drained a 26-foot three-pointer with 13 seconds left, assisted by Butler, for the 119-118 final margin. Toppin closed with 26 points on 9-of-23 shooting and nine rebounds in 42 minutes.
Newell added 19 points and eight rebounds. Vit Krejci contributed seven points and two assists.
Powell topped Miami with 17 points. Adebayo ended with 13 points.
Atlanta posted 48 paint points to Miami’s 70. The Hawks turned 19 turnovers into 13 points.
