Thunder lose Jalen Williams, Cason Wallace to major injuries

The Oklahoma City Thunder have suffered two major injury blows, with Jalen Williams diagnosed with a dislocated left ankle and fractured fibula and Cason Wallace facing surgery for a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Both players are expected to miss several months, potentially sidelining them for most or all of the 2026-27 season.

Shams Charania reported Monday, October 26, that both players would undergo surgery and face lengthy recoveries, leaving the defending contenders without two important members of their rotation.

“These are devastating blows to the Thunder, who had championship hopes this season,” Charania said on SportsCenter. “This has a major dent to that championship hope.”

Williams’ injury is particularly concerning after he missed significant time last season because of hamstring problems. The 25-year-old had started Oklahoma City’s first three games this season, averaging 13.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 31.7 minutes per game.

Although those scoring numbers were below his established level, Williams’ return to the lineup had been an important part of Oklahoma City’s plans. His absence removes a key scorer and playmaker alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Wallace’s injury is another significant setback for Oklahoma City. The 22-year-old guard had started three of the Thunder’s first four games, averaging 6.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 2.3 steals in 16.3 minutes per game. His defensive ability had made him a valuable part of the rotation.

Wallace recently signed a five-year, $139 million contract extension, reflecting the organization’s long-term commitment to the young guard.

“He also has emerged as a great two-way player for this Thunder organization,” Charania said. “He’s one of the top defenders in the league.”

The injuries leave Oklahoma City without two rotation players as it looks to build on a 4-0 start. Gilgeous-Alexander leads the team with 27.3 points per game, while Ajay Mitchell is averaging 16.0 points and 3.8 assists through four games.

Charania said both Williams and Wallace would face extensive rehabilitation, with the possibility of returning before or during the playoffs remaining uncertain.

“Both players will want to come back at some point before the playoffs or during the playoffs for the Thunder this year,” Charania said. “But both will be facing long, extensive rehabs.”
