The Phoenix Suns are reportedly hesitant to finalize a long-term contract with center Mark Williams, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer. The team wants another full season to evaluate Williams’ performance and health before making a commitment.

Williams, 23, was selected 15th overall by the Charlotte Hornets in the 2022 NBA Draft. Despite flashes of dominance, injuries have limited him to 106 games over his first three seasons in the league.

During the 2024–25 season, Williams averaged 15.3 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks over 44 games, showing his potential as a starting-caliber center. However, Phoenix is cautious after his past back injury and a rescinded trade with the Lakers in February due to a failed physical.

The Suns acquired Williams on June 30 in exchange for Vasilije Micic, the draft rights to Liam McNeeley, and a 2029 first-round pick. He is currently in the final year of his four-year, $18 million rookie scale contract.

Phoenix sees Williams as a potential anchor for the frontcourt but wants to confirm he can remain healthy and maintain consistency over a full season. His size, defensive presence, and rebounding ability make him a valuable asset if he can avoid further injuries.
