The Los Angeles Lakers have officially withdrawn from their trade agreement involving Mark Williams, citing the Charlotte Hornets’ inability to fulfill a crucial condition required for the deal to proceed.
The Lakers reportedly discovered several concerns during Williams’ physical examination, though none were related to his previously noted back issues.
As the trade deadline approached, the Lakers initially struck a deal to bring Williams to Los Angeles. In return, the team would send Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, an unprotected 2031 first-round draft pick, and a 2030 first-round pick swap to the Hornets.
However, the transaction was contingent upon Williams and Knecht completing medical assessments to confirm their fitness to play.
The 23-year-old Williams has faced significant setbacks during his first three seasons in the league. After appearing in 43 games as a rookie, he was limited to 19 games during the 2023-24 season.
So far this season, he has managed to participate in only 23 games. Despite his limited availability, Williams has demonstrated potential on the court, averaging 15.6 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game while logging 25 minutes per contest.
With this trade rescinded, the Lakers are now faced with the challenge of adjusting their roster. They will need to waive a current player to reintegrate Dalton Knecht and Williams back onto the roster.
Additionally, due to the team’s status above the first salary cap apron, they are prohibited from signing any buyout players who were previously earning more than the mid-level exception.
