Desmond Bane’s arrival in Orlando marks a turning point for the Magic, who paid a steep price to add the sharpshooting guard but believe his presence can elevate them into true contention.

As Marc J. Spears of Andscape reports, Orlando finalized a blockbuster trade with Memphis, sending out Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks, and a first-round swap to land Bane.

Paolo Banchero, the centerpiece of the Magic’s young core, is convinced the gamble will pay off.

“It’s a great fit for who we are as a team,” Banchero said. “He adds what we’re missing, and he also adds to what we already have. It’s like the perfect match. We don’t have anybody who can make shots like him, who can kind of leverage the way he is able to make shots, then make plays for others and get downhill and create. He’s a Swiss Army knife just as a player, as a guard. He is stronger than 99 percent of the guards in the league with how he’s built. He’s going to fit into what we do.”

For Bane, the news of the trade came as a shock. He recalled receiving a text from Grizzlies general manager Zach Kleiman on Father’s Day, asking him to talk immediately, followed by a FaceTime call in which Kleiman delivered the news.

Though caught off guard after spending his first five NBA seasons in Memphis, Bane holds no resentment.

“No bad blood at all,” he told Spears, adding that he feels fortunate to be moving into a strong situation in Orlando.

At the same time, Bane admitted some frustration that the Grizzlies never had the chance to fully realize their potential with their key players healthy.

“I feel like we never really got a chance to see what it would be like for a full season with our core and everybody healthy,” he said. “But you can only wait so long. In this business, you only got so many years to make something happen.”
