The Los Angeles Lakers received encouraging news on Tuesday as Marcus Smart took part in the live-play portions of practice for the first time in training camp, according to head coach JJ Redick.
Smart, who has been limited due to Achilles tendinopathy, had gradually ramped up his workload and finally joined full-contact drills.
Forward Jarred Vanderbilt was particularly impressed with what he saw from the veteran guard, praising both his physical ability and his leadership.
“He looked great. He was moving great,” Vanderbilt said, via Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times.
“But like I said, his main power is that he’s vocal. So being able to help the guys. Communicate, that’s a big part of defense also. Being physical is one of them, but also being vocal, being able to communicate. I think he does both at a very high level. So, he can definitely help us on that end of the floor.”
Smart joined the Lakers this offseason after being bought out by the Washington Wizards.
Known for his tenacity, defense, and intensity, the former Defensive Player of the Year is expected to be a central piece of Los Angeles’ backcourt rotation once he’s fully healthy.
